Start choosing your Behr Paint colors by browsing their website for options. It is often helpful when choosing a motif for a room to start with a small inspiration like a decorative throw pillow, or painting. Then build the room around that color motif.

How to Choose Behr Paint Colors

We’ve all stood in front of hundreds of paint color charts in the store trying to decide which paint color would look best on our walls and which trim color would look good with the wall color and what color should I paint the ceiling? We end up coming home with books and hundreds of color charts.

Here is a solution to that problem. Now you can walk into any hardware store or paint store that carries Behr Paint and have a pretty good idea of what you are looking for and save yourself some time.

Behr Paint has an online website with a virtual project center where you can coordinate your walls, trim and ceiling colors together and it also provides you with the paint name and number. Now you can walk into the store and simply look for that name and number on the paint color charts

Instructions

First, go to Behr Paint’s website. I have listed the link below. Once the page loads, over to the right on the top you will see “Project Center”. Holding your mouse over that tab, a drop down box will appear. Go down to “Visualize with Color Smart”.

A smaller box will start to load. Once that appears, hit browse colors. From there you choose which color family you are interested in (Reds, Blues, Greens, etc.). Choose the color and explore. You can lighten or darken the color. Once you choose your main color, you hit “Coordinate”. Color Smart will group together two other colors with the main color. From there, select which grouping is close to what you are interested in, and again, you can fine tune those two colors. Once you have all three colors to your liking, hit “Preview”.

Now you can either load your own photo, or use a sample. You can select the room, or the exterior. Click on your 3 colors and place them where you want it in the room (wall, ceiling, trim).

What Colors Do Behr Paints and Primers Come In?

If you’re looking to spruce up a room in your home, Behr paint — and the company’s nearly endless color line — is a convenient choice. In addition to virtual color centers, inspirational galleries and project centers, Behr offers more than 2,000 standard colors, has eight-ounce samples at reasonable prices, and will custom-tint a color to fit your project if necessary.

Primers

Behr offers three primers in its Premium Plus Line: drywall, enamel undercoat, and oil-based. These are typically available in white but can be tinted if they are going under a red or very dark paint.

Behr Premium Plus Ultra

Behr’s primer- and- paint-in-one option is available in 386 colors, including reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, purples, neutrals and blacks, and whites. This is a great line if you want to limit the number of color options you can choose from, use the color combination suggestions, and skip the step of priming. This paint is available in all the standard sheens — flat, satin, semi-gloss and ceiling — but can’t be custom tinted.

Behr Premium Plus

If color is your thing, the Premium Plus line is for you. More than 2,000 colors are available, and Behr offers an online ColorSmart option to help you find the exact tone that’s right for you and also has a color coordinator to help you choose trim and accent colors. Behr will also match colors for you in the Premium Plus line and eight-ounce samples are available so you can paint different colors on your walls, with the light you will see the paint in, to ensure that the decisions you make will be correct.

Disney by Behr

While this children’s palette technically contains many of the same colors as the Premium Plus line, it is limited to 168 colors and has thematic options for infants, kids, boys, girls, and teens. The color lines include Pooh, Princess, Buzz, Classic Pooh, and Mickey. The thematic palettes include everything from Nemo and Cinderella to Buzz Lightyear and Lizzy McGuire.

How do I Convert Behr Paint Color to Valspar?

Valspar paints were created with the do-it-yourselfer in mind. They are sold through Lowe’s home improvement stores and other independent paint retailers across the United States. Behr paints are also sold by a do-it-yourself megastore, Home Depot. Some online companies offer to match your Behr paint color with a Valspar equivalent for a fee, based on the color code number. However, you can avoid this fee by having a paint specialist at a Valspar dealer match the paint for you on a computerized paint matching system.

Instructions

Locate a sample of the Behr color you want to convert to Valspar. This can be a color swatch card or a sample of dried Behr paint in the appropriate color. If you are using a dried paint sample, the sample should be at least the size of a quarter.

Visit Valspar.com and enter your ZIP code into the “Find a store near you” field on the right half of the Web page, then click “Go.”

Call the stores listed in the results to find out which retailers have a computerized color matching system. Most Lowe’s stores have these systems, but it is best to call ahead to make sure the computer is operational before you make the trip to the store.

Give your paint sample to the paint specialist and ask him to match it with a Valspar paint color in your preferred finish, such as flat, satin, eggshell or semigloss.

Check a sample of the Valspar paint after it is mixed and compare it to your Behr sample. Make sure the paint is dry before you compare it, as most colors dry darker than they look when they are wet. If the color does not match as closely as you wish, ask the clerk to try the mixture again until you are satisfied.

How to Decorate With Behr Paint

Preparing the Wall for Paint

Mix trisodium phosphate in a bucket with warm water. Wipe down the surface you are painting with a rag soaked in the TSP mixture. Let the area dry for a few minutes to one hour.

Sand the surface of the wall lightly with 80-grit sandpaper to remove any imperfections and remaining debris. Wipe the area down with a damp rag to remove the sanding dust.
Patch any holes or large chips on the surface with spackle, using your putty knife. Let the spackle dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Sand the patched area with 120-grit sandpaper so that it is flush with the wall. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove any sanding dust.

Creating a Decorative Wall

Paint the wall with Behr Premium Plus Ultra Interior Flat Enamel, using a roller and a paintbrush for edging. Allow the paint to dry for at least two hours.

Apply a second coat of the flat enamel paint, if needed. If you see bare spots or uneven color, the walls need a second coat of paint. Allow to dry for at least two hours.

Tape your design off on the wall with painter’s tape. You can create a pattern design, like stripes or circles of varying sizes across the entire wall, or one large design, such as a star in the middle of the wall.

Paint your design by filling the space within the tape lines with the Behr Premium Plus Interior/Exterior Hi-Gloss Enamel in the same color as your flat paint, using a paint roller and a paintbrush for the edges.

Remove the tape after letting the paint dry for at least two hours.
