Caring for your Oiled Wood Flooring Posted: 27 Nov 2012 12:42 PM PST Caring for your oiled wood flooring Getting new wooden flooring installed can be really exciting, with your home suddenly having a new lease of life. However, this doesn’t always last long if you don’t take care of it. This is why I’ve compiled a few tips on maintaining your oiled wood flooring so it looks great for a long time to come. What not to do Before I start giving you suggestions on the best ways to look after the oiled wood flooring in your hallway, living room, bedroom or kitchen, you should know there are several things that you shouldn’t do when trying to care for your new covering. These are big ‘no nos’ as they can actually damage the wood, so you end up causing more harm than good. You should never use general household cleaners or detergents when washing an oiled wooden floor. These can react badly with the oil and may destroy the finish. It is important to get the right cleaner for your floor, so don’t be tempted to buy products from your local supermarket instead, as these won’t be up to the job. Another tip is avoiding using excessive water. You might think that water is harmless, but it can affect the oiled surface of the wood. What’s more, you have to know how the oil was applied after your wood was installed. This way you can use the correct maintenance fluid in the same way. Now you’ve learnt what you shouldn’t do, you can find out what you should do to keep your floor looking great for years to come. Use professional maintenance kits You usually find that the retailer where you got your new oiled wooden floor will also stock maintenance kits. These have everything you need to ensure your floor maintains its look. The specific detergent you can use on oiled floors typically come with instructions on how to use them, so you don’t make any mistakes. You might also get a device to apply them with, such as a cloth. If you haven’t installed your floor yet, it is worth asking whether the company you are looking at sells maintenance kits, or if they know of somewhere nearby that does so you can get your hands on them easily. Regular cleaning If you don’t want to do a deep clean but just wish to give it a quick once over, you can simply brush your floor with a soft broom. Doing this will not only clean the wood straightaway, but continuous brushing will also prolong the life of the surface. After you have brushed, you can use a damp cloth. As I mentioned before, don’t cover the wood in lots of water as oiled surfaces are porous and could absorb this. So, make sure the mop or cloth is well wrung out before putting it on the floor. Once you have gone over the floor, let it dry naturally. It is important that you do remember to clean your floors, whichever way you choose to do so. Oiled floors require constant care, otherwise they may become dull and dirty over time. You can also re-oil your floor as and when it needs a bit more of a touch up, so it can look as good as new for as long as you want.
