A Guide to Boosting the Kerb Appeal of Your Property Posted: 18 Dec 2012 12:39 PM PST If you are planning to put your home on the market, you’ll want to make it as attractive as possible to potential buyers. There are lots of things you can do to improve your property before selling it, but make sure you don’t get too carried away with the interior and neglect your outdoor areas. How a house appears from the street is often referred to as kerb appeal and, as it’s the first impression potential purchasers will get of your property, it’s worth taking the time to get this right. Here are a few tips about how to make your home look great from the outside. 1. Tidy the front garden If you’re lucky enough to have a front garden, make this a real selling point by ensuring all the flowerbeds are tidy, the grass has been recently mowed and that any features you have – like a pond or fountain – really stand out. Cutting back unruly bushes and trees that encroach on the path or driveway, or that obscure your windows, is advisable, too. If your garden is a little bare and empty, it could be worth investing in some new plants to brighten it up, so consider whether planting a few bulbs in the spring or putting some flowers in pots outside is worth the effort to make your home more sellable. 2. Paint the front door As people walk from the street towards your property, you want it to be inviting. Giving your front door a new lick of paint can be all it takes to make it feel really welcoming. You should also polish up your house number or any plaque you have that displays the name of your home and make sure they are visible from the street, as this will not only make your dwelling look good, but also mean it is easy for potential buyers to find. 3. Repaint the house If your home is painted on the exterior, now could be the perfect time to refresh the paint. While this may seem like a big job to do just before you move on, it can make a house much more attractive to purchasers and mean you get a quick sale. Using the right equipment – like a spray gun and compressor - to apply the fresh coat of paint will also make the task much quicker and mean you get even coverage across all the walls. If you do decide to repaint your home, be certain to protect the windows and their frames while you’re using the spray gun, and finish the edges off by hand with a brush. You should also lay dust sheets over any of your plants that are close to the house to prevent paint from being spilt on them and potentially killing them. It also means your front garden will still look tidy once you’ve completed the work. 4. Clean the driveway If you have a drive rather than a garden in front of your home, you should ensure this is as clean and tidy as possible. Sweep up any dirt or debris that is lying around and, if your drive is paved, use a pressure washer to give it a really thorough clean. Should you have gravel instead, make sure there is an even covering and add some new stones if you feel this is necessary. It is also worth checking for any weeds and removing them if plants have started to grow here. Don’t forget to clean your garage door and repaint it if it is looking a little worn, as all of these small touches indicate that the house on sale is well maintained and in good condition. |
