The last decade has seen the general quality of products decline in both price and quality. Some consumers, that are more bothered about quality than price, struggle to know where to look.
One material that they know they can count on is oak. It has become the one material that people know they can trust. They are happy to spend lots of cash, knowing that a product has been constructed using oak. Why is this? Why do so many people automatically assume that oak is a premium material? The properties of oak Oak is one of the few materials that have not been marketed heavily in order to gain its reputation for being prestigious and high quality. Instead, the fact that it has been used for 100s of years is enough to satisfy most people. One of the things that wood suffers from is rot. It is extremely hard to avoid. As soon as moisture takes hold of wood, fungi starts to take over and ruins the wood completely. This is not just down to the design of products that use wood, but the type of wood being used. Oak is known for being highly resistant when it comes to insect and fungus attacks. Even when moisture sets in, it rots a lot slower than most other types of wood, meaning it has increased durability in comparison. Aesthetically pleasing It is hard to get products that are cheap and high quality. It is also hard to find products that are high quality and aesthetically pleasing. This is another area where oak becomes a fan favourite. Thanks to the strong rustic grain that it possesses, it is extremely pleasing on the eye. Being a hardwood, it is extremely durable, but still soft enough to be moulded into the perfect shape. Mass distribution Like anything that gets popular, it has to be seen by the public in the masses before hand. As carpenters slowly realised how much quality that oak possessed, they started using it for a range of different projects. Nowadays, people can see solid oak being used in wood flooring, beams for houses, furniture and even as garden features. In fact, many "pre-packed" DIY house kits are made from oak, as they offer a cheap and durable alternative to the standard bricks and mortar build.
