Born in northern and living in southern California it's apparent how much California has influenced my work. The pale blue-grays of the San Francisco fog, the saturated celadons of Los Angeles's agaves, and the myriad of greens out my every window have formed my signature palette. The constant California light has illuminated for me the power of nuance. MY MOTHER, the other key influence in my life and my work, was an oil painter and an inventor. She was full of original ideas and taught me to believe in my own. One of her greatest lessons she embodied and passed down to me was that style had nothing to do with money and everything to do with how you felt about yourself…in a word, "confidence." Never having worked for anyone else, and largely self-taught, I am fortunate to have had such trusting and loyal clients and I remain so grateful that they took a chance on me. Looking back over my 30-year career, I see how my confidence and the belief in my own ideas have served me well. In addition to my many wonderful clients, I've been equally fortunate to form partnerships with the world's top manufacturers. On top of everything I value my staff of 12 with whom I work closely in my Los Angeles studio. Their talent and dedication allow me to create products for which I am proud, and homes in which I'd want to live. They make it possible for me to travel the world for inspiration and speak globally on the things that I love. My first book, AROUND BEAUTY (Rizzoli), will be published in October 2012.
