Home Improvement Projects that Can Increase Natural Light into Your Home Posted: 15 Dec 2015 10:01 PM PST Maximizing Natural Light Are you not getting enough sunlight inside your home? It is best that natural light comes into your house so you do not have to turn on all the lights during daytime. This can save you a few dollars from your energy bill every month. The lack of natural light entering your home can be because of different reasons, like not enough windows and stuffs that block the light to enter. There are ways to maximize the natural light to enter your home. You cannot only take advantage of saving the power and reducing your electricity bill, but it also brings out the beauty of your interiors, like the furniture and fabric. If all of these are seen with the help of natural lighting, it brings a different mood to the room. Here are some ways you can increase the chances of sunlight to enter your home. - Reflect it with mirrors. Instead of having the sunlight absorbed, use mirrors to reflect the light inside the house. You can hang a large mirror on a wall opposite the windows. Smaller mirrors can do the trick of streaming in the natural light to the room, especially when you light it on the back of bookshelves or arranged on one wall. If you are shopping for furniture or decorations, go for glass or with mirrored accents.
- Choose light color palette than dark. Lighter colors can better reflect natural light. From the wall painting to furniture, choose cooler tones like blue-grays and taupes. You can choose brighter colors for your throws, pillows and other smaller furnishings. This can give your room a brighter and livelier look.
- Get your windows updated. If you currently have shades, particularly Roman shades, it can block the sunlight even if it is open. Draperies, on the other hand, are easier to open, hung on rings, which fully allow the light in. If you don't like draperies, choose Venetian blinds. You get to control the amount of light to come in and where to angle the light directly.
- For those who have no problems with the budget to spend, you can go ahead and add skylights. This one can greatly reduce your electricity costs for the long-term. It is highly suggested to install skylights on rooms that are most often used, like bathrooms, and areas the get most sunlight.
- Remove any clutter and obstacles that maybe be blocking the light to enter the windows and into your house. Sometimes these obstacles are not found inside the house but rather external factors, like hedges and trees.
