How to Organise Your Garage

Posted: 13 Jul 2016 01:49 AM PDT

It is practically an unspoken rule that garages are not used for parking any more, but instead provide a very useful storage space.  It is very rare that you will come across a garage that has ever seen a car in it and let's face it, most modern houses have a severe need for extra storage. It is very rare for a modern house to have large enough cupboards, utility rooms or spare rooms that are not already used for day to day essentials and it is not always that there is a loft that can be boarded and used.  Unused furniture, tools, toys – there is never enough space in the house to store it all.  Whilst you are waiting for another boot fare to come along or if you move house every few years and are not keen on getting rid of your old furniture, the extra space that a garage provides can prove invaluable.

Unfortunately over time garages have a habit of getting so cluttered that it's practically impossible to find anything.  How many times did you have to go out and buy something that you are sure you put away, but now cannot find.  And how many times did you find things in your garage thinking – I wish I found this a year ago when I actually needed it.  Unfortunately mess and clutter tend to turn into even more clutter.  The more difficult it is to get to anything, the less likely you will actually be to get rid of anything that you have no use for any more.

Organising Your Garage

So why not take a couple of days off or use a weekend to sort out what you have in the garage and organise it all in such a way that getting to things is easy.  Here are a few steps that will sort out the mess in the garage once and for all.

  • Declutter – be ruthless. Anything you have not used in the last 12 months has to be binned, sold or given away.  Old clothes, books and toys can go to charity shops, facebay, eBay or Gumtree.  Anything that does not sell and is not needed has to go. Every council has a recycling centre open at least six days a week that will take large and bulky items as well as the usual household rubbish.  If some items are too big to fit in your car, some councils offer collections for bulky items free of charge for the first item and as little as £20-£30 for any item after that.  This could prove especially useful  for heavy items like old fridges and washing machines.
  • Change the light bulb to a brighter one and if you can, add another light point. Having good lighting can make a huge difference to how usable the space is.  If you do not have the budget for adding an extra light point, there are many movement sensitive lights that are available online that you might want to consider.
  • Invest in some heavy load warehouse shelving. These come in different widths, depths and heights and start from £30 per bay.  This might seem expensive if you think that an average garage can easily take 6-8 bays, but even one bay can make a huge difference.  If your garage has enough height, go for 220cm shelves that will give you a useful top shelf for items that are not used often.  Depth is important too.  It might be an idea to mix and match and get some shelves that are 30 or 45cm deep and some that are 60cm to allow for bigger items or boxes. Heavy load shelving is normally interlocking and can be fixed to the wall, making it very sturdy.

Garage Wall Hooks

  • Buy a tool organiser drawers for small bits and pieces.  Sizes of drawers vary and are a very efficient way to organise small nuts, bolts and screws, but also hammers and drills that you might have.  If you are  not into diy and do not have any tools, organiser drawers might still prove very useful for sorting anything from sewing bits to medical kits or even small children's toys.
  • Storage boxes are a lot easier to organise than boxes of various shapes. See through boxes make it easier to see what is inside and they can be stacked on top of each other, saving valuable floor space.  Go for boxes with the clip on lids if you are using the boxes for heavy clothes, otherwise stacking them might prove tricky.

Use the roof space if you can.  MDF boards can be used as shelves between the roof structure beams and can hold a lot of larger items that are not too heavy.

Keep Your Shower or Bath Screen Clean

Posted: 12 Jul 2016 03:12 PM PDT

If your shower or bath screen is beginning to look like it's made from frosted glass it might be the sign that you need to do something about it.

Limescale, soapscum and water stains are notoriously difficult to get rid of even with a lot of scrubbing.  The only way to make the job easier is to use a good quality limescale remover like Cilit Bang Power Cleaner or Mr Muscle Limescale remover that will get rid of the lime scale and any bathroom grime.  Spray the screen generously with a foam or clear spray limescale remover and leave it to work for up to 5 minutes, then scrub it gently with a sponge and rinse thoroughly with water.  This should leave your bathroom screen looking clean and shiny.

The secret to always having a clean shower screen though is regular maintenance.  Every time you have a shower the water dries out, leaving hundreds of tiny water stains on the glass.  In the UK there are a lot of areas that have hard water particularly prone to limescale build up.

So is there anything you can do to prevent this from happening?  The solution is incredibly easy and cheap – a squeegee – a simple but effective scraping blade with a rubber edge that can be used for cleaning any glass or mirror surfaces.  You can pick one up in any supermarket or large home wares shop for £1 – £2 – Ikea sell them for £0.80.  Simply wipe the shower screen with the squeegee after every shower to clean the glass perfectly clean.  It won't take you more than a few seconds and will ultimately save you a lot of time and effort.  They look sleek and will not be an eyesore in your bathroom and their slim shape fits perfectly behind the shower or bath tap, making it easy to keep them handy.

For a sparkling clean finish, spray some glass cleaner on your shower screen every few weeks and use the squeegee to get rid of the cleaning residue.

How to Choose a Children’s Rug

Posted: 11 Jul 2016 06:53 AM PDT

When it comes to choosing a rug for your child's room there isn't a right or a wrong choice.  The size and the design of the rug you need will depend on your circumstances and the use that you think the rug might get.

Here is a simple check list that might help you narrow down your options to the right rug for your child's nursery.

  1. Do the floors need protecting? A rug is a lot easier to clean and replace with time if necessary than a carpet. It will help keep your cream carpets intact and will protect your laminate or wood floors from scratches and dents.
  2. Does the room need an injection of colour? Children love brightly coloured rugs and kids' rugs make a lovely addition to neutral colour schemes. Add a few stickers to the walls, a bright rug on the floor and keep everything else as neutral or colourful as you want – a rug will bring together the colours in your room and will make the design cohesive.
  3. Are you decorating a nursery for a boy, girl or both? Often stereotypes are true and boys would often choose a football pitch rug, whilst girls are more likely to go for a pink fairyland one.  A bestselling rug, however, is the Jungle rug, followed closely by the Pirate rug, that have proven to be a hit with both boys and girls, making them perfect for shared rooms too.
  4. What kind of play does your child enjoy? If your child is into playing outside, then a small rug by the bed might be sufficient.  If you regularly end up with Lego castles and dinosaur battles on the floor, a larger rug would be a perfect choice. A 160x230cm rug will happily accommodate your child and the toys or even a few friends.
  5. How big is the room? Often children's rooms are small. Some of the larger children's rug sizes could potentially be too large. Look around the room and consider the furniture that is already in place.  Would a rug interfere with the door openings or would the bed obscure parts of the design of the rug that your child might want to see?  Ideally you want to leave at least 15-20cm between the wall and the rug so a 140x200cm or 160x230cm rug would be perfectly suited for a 200x300cm room and a 200x300cm rug would be ideal for a 300x400cm room.
