How to Make Best Use of Bathroom Space Posted: 12 Sep 2016 01:53 AM PDT As much as we would like a palatial suite with his and hers basins, roll top bath and a view, most of us have to live with a reality of our bathrooms being the size of a small closet. If you are happy with just your toothpaste and a toothbrush, you don't have a problem, but what happens if you do need storage? Mirror cabinets are normally not very deep, but they can still hide a multitude of small bits and pieces like spare soaps, toothpaste and erasers. If you can't go for a wide double door cabinet, do consider taller ones. Top shelves will not be as easy to get to, but can be still used for items that are not used every day. Stick on pots are a great solution for cabinet doors – they are perfect for sorting out small items like make up pencils, lipsticks, toothbrushes. They come in various sizes and shapes and are self-adhesive, making them easy to apply and extremely versatile. Hung or table top basins do not take up any floor space, creating a perfect spot for a laundry basket or bathroom scales. Alternatively why not get a few wicker baskets that would fit under the sink perfectly and would take bulkier items like hair dryers or hair straighteners. Vanity units provide a decent amount of space for spare toilet rolls, small towels or toiletries. If you are renting and changing a sink to a hung one is not an option, some vanity units can be fitted under your existing sink. Tall units – there are many tall units that look excellent and are very practical but are too deep to even be considered an option for most bathrooms. Some, however are suitable even for small rooms and only need a small amount of floor space. Look for ones that are about 25cm deep – they will not look overpowering, but will still be practical. Is there a space between your bath or sink and the door frame that could be used? Go for mirror front cabinets – mirrors create an illusion of bigger and brighter spaces and act as an alternative for windows in spaces that do not have them. Using a spice rack in a bathroom would not immediately spring to one's mind. In reality spice racks can offer a brilliant solution for small spaces. You can find a space for one in almost any bathroom and it can take care of all the shampoos, shower gels, body creams and other tubes and pots that we all have. They come in different heights and shelf widths, offering even more flexibility. Over the door hook rails – if your know that wall towel rails will leave you with bruises every time you move, use over the door hook rails for your towels and dressing gowns. These vary from one or two hook ones to larger ones with six or seven hooks. Do use the space above your door – a shelf or a cabinet above the door can be a great option for storing items that are not used every day, like spare towels or toiletries. A shelf with a few baskets or a cabinet with sliding doors will look great and will not get in the way even in the smallest of spaces. Posted: 12 Sep 2016 01:01 AM PDT You don’t have to be a professional chef to have a well designed, practical and professional kitchen. Let's discuss a few important points one needs to think about when planning your kitchen. There is a very useful free tool I use all the time to help visualise my kitchen design. LightingWorking in the kitchen is not without risks. There are sharp knives, hot pans and pots and other things to hurt yourself with. Therefore it is very important to be on full alert and pay close attention to what you're doing. Therefore, you need to carefully think when planning lighting in the kitchen. All areas have to be well lit and bright. It helps to split the kitchen into different areas. On one hand, food preparation areas need to have strong bright light. On the other hand, dining areas or kitchen island will look much better with soft muted light. This will create a much better relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. Wall spaceWhen thinking about creating storage space make sure to use every available space on kitchen walls. Tall wall cabinets will create enough space to accommodate all your kitchen needs. Make sure to use top shelves for items you very rarely use. Your bottom shelves are best suited for plates and other utensils that are used on the daily basis. Heavy items like pots and pans can go into the bottom units under your worktop. You can store them one on top of another to maximise your space the best way you can. Kitchen islandKitchen island should not only be a place where you cook and have your breakfast but it can also be very useful design element dividing your kitchen space and editing functionality. So how do you make the most out of it? You can hide your dishwasher and your rubbish bin inside the island. The space under the island can also be used to install additional shelves and drawers. WorktopWhen choosing your worktop a lot depends on your budget. If you're lucky enough to be able to afford marble or granite you should definitely do it. High quality stone worktop is definitely worth every penny. It's durable, long-lasting as well as looks great and adds a luxury feel to your kitchen design. Your second best option is hardwood worktop. Good quality oak or walnut worktop can add warmth and style to any kitchen. Hardwood worktops can be polished and reconditioned which means you will easily get 10 to 20 years out of it making it great value for money. By far the cheapest option available on the market is laminate worktop. They are fairly cheap but can provide a cost-effective alternative when budget is tight. In recent years glass worktops have become increasingly common. Glass worktop can create a sleek ultramodern minimalist look with its glossy finish and simplicity.
