As long as you have a bed and a chest of drawers or a shelf, you have enough space. Kitchens, however, are a completely different story. You need clear worktop areas, sufficient shelves and enough walking space around the kitchen cabinets. But what do you do if your kitchen just is not big enough to look good and be functional?
Often clever design and space saving ideas can really make a difference. The first thing you normally see when you walk into a kitchen is the worktop. This is the area that has a tendency to become cluttered, making the kitchen look messy. Below are just a few ideas on how to make your kitchen surfaces tidy. - Choose your appliances wisely and only go for the ones that you actually need and use often. Modern Electric Pressure Cookers are multi-functional and can easily replace a slow cooker, steamer and rice cooker.
- Get rid of your knife rack and replace it with a magnetic one instead. The wall space between the worktop and the cabinets is undeservedly underrated. Placing a magnetic knife rack on the wall will prove convenient and will save you some valuable space on the worktop.
- Fit a kitchen rail shelf. It will give you space for bits and pieces like kitchen towels and cloths.
- Move the utensil pots and dish drainer from the worktop. This does not mean they have to go in a drawer. Go for hooked pots and drainer to fit the kitchen rail.
 - Use the space on top of the cabinets. Arrange the pots and pans neatly to create a nice display.
- Use the space under the cabinets to add wine glass holder racks. Wine glasses always add a contemporary touch, but it is not often we have the space to display them. Hanging them upside down under a cabinet solves that problem. Alternatively use the space to hang cereal, tea and coffee jars. Attach the lids of the jars to the bottom of the cabinets for a creative touch.
- Use sides of cabinets to attach utensils holders. These can look stylish and be useful not just for utensils but can also double up as fruit or vegetable storage.
- Change the plinth under the floor cabinets to create handy drawers. Towels, spare sponges and clothes or even spice pots can be stored here.
- Add a thin cabinet over the kitchen door. This may not be suitable for anything heavy, but could still provide a much needed storage solution. Light appliances that are not needed every day, serving dishes and spare glasses could go here.
