How to fix a shower drain if it’s blocked Posted: 31 Jan 2017 10:45 PM PST If you have ever experienced a blocked drain in your shower then you know how inconvenient it can be. You do not want to be standing in stale water in the shower because it's not draining as it should. You need to make sure that the water starts draining again, as quickly as possible. If you do not feel confident to take a look at the problem yourself you should contact a professional plumber who will help you to resolve the issue. We are going to take a look at why a shower drain may be blocked. We are also going to examine the steps you should take if you want to try and unblock the drain yourself. It's often necessary to try more than one of these methods in order to get the water draining again. Why might a shower drain be blocked? Most of the time you will find that your shower drains with no problem; but if the draining of your shower becomes an issue you may be wondering why. The fact is that each time you get a shower there is a good chance that hair, dead skin and soap scum are washed down the drain as you get clean. Eventually these products can come together in the drain and cause a blockage. When this happens the water is not able to pass as it should and the shower no longer drains effectively. This is when you may need to employ one or more of the solutions on our list. Start with boiling waterThe easiest method of unblocking a shower drain is to use boiling water. It has to be said that this is often unsuccessful but if the blockage is fairly loose it may just do the trick, so it's worth a try. All you have to do is simply pour boing water down the drain. Using a plunger to clear the blockageIf you are not successful in moving the blockage using boiling water you should try using a plunger. Make sure that the plunger is tightly sealed around the top of the drain before you start to plunge. Once you have used the plunger you simply need to run water in the shower to see if it clears effectively. Using your hand to remove the blockageIf you are going to use your hand to attempt to clear a blockage in a shower drain you should always make sure to wear protective gloves. You will usually need to unscrew the drain cover before removing it to enable you to access the drain. The drain itself may be dark so it's a good idea to have a torch to hand so that you can see. Once you can see the blockage all you have to do is reach down and remove it. It's important to be careful that you do not get stuck or over reach. Using a drain snake to remove the blockageIf you are not able to reach the blockage with your hand you may want to consider using a drain snake. You can buy this plumbing implement from the store and it will help you reach down the drain to remove the blockage and enable water to flow freely again. As we mentioned earlier in the article, it's possible that you will need to try several of these methods before you are successful in clearing the blockage from the shower drain. It's also possible that you may not be successful at all. If you have difficulties clearing the drain yourself you should contact a plumber in Lane Cove; never just leave the problem unresolved as the drain will not clear itself.
