Amazing Contemporary Casey Key Guest House in Florida by TOTeMS Architecture Posted: 29 Jul 2011 06:35 AM PDT This Casey Key Guest House, an amazing contemporary guest residence was designed by American architectural firm TOTeMS. The project consists of a small single family guest house set within a mature oak hammock, located on a barrier island on Sarasota bay. The structure is inspired by the character of the live oaks, which have been shaped by the prevailing coastal winds from the west. The Owner requested a design that was a "house in the trees". A small program, including one bedroom, bath, living area with kitchenette, and a loft is organized to provide privacy between a neighboring property to the north, while offering broad views of the oak hammock to the south and west, and the intercoastal waterway to the east. Casey Key Guest House is a construction based on an arched structure where wood seems to dominate all the spaces. Curved glulam pine beams, which are anchored to the elevated concrete slab at their base, curve up and over the entire space, reflect the arching quality of the live oak limbs. Ship lap cypress siding is used to clad the exterior walls and the interior walls between the glulam beams. Here you may relax and enjoying the comfort of every space of this building: a bedroom, a bathroom, a living area with a kitchenette and a wonderful loft which will offer great views of the surrounding landscape. The fact that it is situated in a flooding area made it necessary to be supported on a specialized steel piling foundation system which will protect it from all these problems. The design is intended to evoke an organic architecture that is influenced by, and reflective of its site.
