Back-Ache and Housework: Simple Tips for Making Life Easier Posted: 27 May 2013 07:54 PM PDT Many people suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. The pain may be mild and temporary, or constant and chronic. Whatever the severity, back pain has the potential to affect an individual's everyday existence and interfere with activities and essential tasks. When it's a question of completing household chores, there are ways to make life easier and less aggravating for your back. As obvious as it may seem, it's also crucial to listen to your body and understand your limits. Use the right equipment The first way to make completing household chores more comfortable is by investing in appropriate items of equipment. Traditional vacuum cleaners were often heavy and cumbersome to move around the home but modern models are much lighter and offer ease of use and manoeuvrability. Upright vacuum cleaners from Vax can be more appropriate than their cylinder counterparts for those who suffer from back pain. Although cylinder cleaners are lightweight and convenient, they may involve more bending and reaching movements during use. As such, an upright model may reduce any aggravation of an existing back condition. Learn correct movements It's widely acknowledged that moving in the correct way can reduce stress on the body. Yet making the appropriate physical movements requires practise and persistence to ensure they become second nature. Bending with the knees and not from the waist can avoid unnecessary strain on the back when lifting heavy objects. So too can ensuring you don't engage in the same activity for a prolonged period of time. Take regular breaks while completing household chores and remember not to twist and turn when lifting objects. Avoid overreaching when attempting to clean nooks and crannies too. Work little and often Consider doing a little cleaning every day and avoid the temptation to tackle the entire household in one session. This will make household maintenance more manageable and is less likely to cause any injury associated with extended periods of physical activity. Listen to your body and if you feel pain then cease the task at hand. Ask for help Although the home needs to be maintained, cleaning is not critical. If an activity is likely to exacerbate an existing condition, avoid undertaking it yourself. Ask family or friends for help or consider paid assistance if permissible. Whatever you do, ensure you take care of your back whilst keeping on top of your household chores. |
