It is important to know that professionals and DIY can have good results following a simple plan of action before they begin digging up an area. Hiring a professional landscaping installation company is a good idea when doing a complete yard renovation or when new construction is involved. It is often hard for the untrained eye to look at a blank canvas and visualize a landscape plan. Although is you are looking into doing some landscaping installation on your own the first issue you will need to consider is the landscape border. A border gives the landscaping a professional look and feel and is relatively easy to install. You must first decide what type of material you would like to use to compliment the desired look and feel. It is also important that the material is able to follow the design of the landscaping for easier installation. To begin any landscaping installation project you will need to draw a plan out on paper. This will give you a better feel for how the overall project will look. Make sure to include on your drawing any yard items that are permanent fixtures. This would include any existing trees that you are not planning on removing, fencing, statues and larger items like your home, decks and patios. After your project is laid out on paper it is best to purchase some spray paint that can be used to safely mark out the design pattern on the ground. Once the border is marked out it is the proper time to begin digging up the area. You can turn up the soil using a shovel or a rototiller. A rototiller is the best for getting all of the grass up and losing the soil for the installation of the border. If the soil is ease to move the border will be able to be inserted and become part of the land instead of lying on top of the soil. Picking a landscaping border might be the hardest part of the landscaping installation process. There is a multitude of materials available to homeowners today. It is like picking a picture frame to be used on your entire home. Some people choose not to use a border material. Be careful if you choose this option because often the materials, whether rocks, mulch or pine needles will seep out into the grass. One material is concrete. You can buy kits now where you can pour the concrete into moulds making your own unique border. My neighbor did this and then stacked the concrete plates on top of one another. This gave texture to his landscaping which looks beautiful. Another concrete option is scalloped edged. This gives height to the border and can be purchased in many colors. If your landscaping has many curves the scalloped concrete edging may be difficult for an inexperienced landscaper. A popular border among homes within subdivisions is preformed concrete blocks. They provide uniformity and are consistent. They can be used on small landscaping job or larger ones and keep gardens looking similar without having to be the exact same. For instance one homeowner might choose to layer the preformed concrete bricks where another would lay one level row. It would depend on the scale of your home. I have wooden edging for the border on our landscaping. I love it because it gives a rustic feel to the landscaping. I have seen multiple ways in which wooden borders are done. We have cylinder shaped pieces of wood that are stuck together using a hidden flexible tube. I have however seen where each piece of wood edging is put into place separately and layered in size so that some are smaller than others. This gives a very natural feeling to the space. Steel edging is used where you are looking for a very modern look. It is often used in areas where it is important that water seepage is kept to a minimum. For instance, steel is used in a space with a paved sidewalk where extra water runoff could reposition the sidewalk leaving it unlevel and therefore not safe. Lastly and most popular amongst do it yourself landscapers is plastic edging. This is an inexpensive easy to manipulate material to use. It also does not take away from the landscaping itself because it is simple. The only downside is that it does not hold up like the heavier thicker materials so it may have to be replaced more often. Landscaping installation should be a fun process. It does require a bit of planning and sweat equity. The end result adds not only aesthetic beauty but also value to the overall value of your home. It is a project that can be done with the whole family because most landscaping installation mistakes are super easy to fix and can be handles without too much extra time spent on the project. They were popular when they were first crafted because of their durability; their long life is still the reason they stay in vogue. In this article, you will find all of the information you need regarding iron railings. When it was discovered that iron could be softened at very high temperatures and formed into any shape, iron railings became popular among rich homeowners in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It was an expensive and time consuming process, so only the wealthiest could afford iron railings. The designs that were created were of such quality that wrought iron and cast iron railings were considered art. Nothing could be mass produced, so only artisans were involved in the creation of beautiful iron railings. Welding as we know it today did not exist, and so pieces of iron were joined together by heating them and forcing them to join by hammering them. Rivets were also used sometimes to join two pieces of iron. Iron railings are broken down into three categories: wrought iron railings, cast iron railings (which existed as far back as the seventeenth century) and steel railings (a relatively new invention). Even though iron railings have undergone many changes throughout the centuries, they have not been much influenced by fashion, and maintain the same characteristics today that they did centuries ago. They are truly ageless fashion. Iron is the main ingredient in iron railings, although the very wealthy, including kings and dukes in their castles, might have added gold to ornament their railings. Various metals are used in iron railings and we will discuss each of them. Wrought Iron Railings: The process of making wrought iron railings is very labor intensive. A length of iron has to be heated to a red hot intensity and then hammered to the desired length and shape. Not many people were attracted to this craft, which required not only hard work but also a strong artistic bent. As a rule, artists are not hard workers, and laborers tend not to be too artistic. This led to a scarcity of craftsmen who could produce wrought iron, which of course led to high prices for wrought iron, following the laws of supply and demand. Cast Iron Railings: Cast iron railings are forged by melting iron and pouring it into pre-cast molds. These molds were usually made from sand in order to make cast iron railings. Railings produced by this method were were fragile. If one was broken, it usually could not be repaired. Because of these limitations, only the very wealthy could afford cast iron railings. Mild steel railings: Mild steel was developed in the eighteenth century and found immediate popularity. It was a perfect material for fencing and railing. Pieces of mild steel could be worked in a cold state, and simply joined by riveting. Not requiring a smithed shop with dangerous heat and flames for forging made mild steel a very practical alternative to cast or wrought iron, and it therefore became popular for railings. Many advances have been made since the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in the manufacture of iron railings. Today’s important advances in welding methods have made it possible to bend iron into shapes that would have been very difficult in the old days. In addition, the pieces of iron can be more easily joined together by modern welding techniques, which render the iron lighter yet stronger. Repair is also easier now, with these modern welding techniques. Today, iron is poured into plates, and then bent to suit a purpose, such as a railing. It is still strong, durable iron, but with a new look, since the shapes it can be bent into is limited only be the imagination of the designer. Stainless steel is now being used for the same purposes as iron once was, and many think that stainless is more elegant looking. Stainless has the added advantage of little maintenance besides easy cleaning. Stainless steel may eventually replace iron as the preferred material for railings. Posted: 07 Jan 2014 05:11 PM PST Wrought Iron Fencing is a Great Way to Protect Your PropertyMany people will not be able to decide what type of fence that they want to protect their home. You want a fence that will provide safety for your loved ones as well as look good. You can find this type of double duty fencing with no problem. The main choice is wrought iron fences as they offer both an elegant look and heavy duty protection. For hundreds of years home owners have protected their families with this style of fencing. The 14th century saw the rise of popularity for wrought iron fencing. These fences were made by iron workers for those families who could pay the high cost of them. Royal families made great use of this ornate and secure style of fencing. Wrought iron fencing was very versatile as it could be used along with other types of fencing to create even more protection. There were wrought iron fences that were used with brick that would look very stately in front of a home. Many would choose an ornate wrought iron fence to make their home look grandiose. This type of fencing enjoyed popularity for centuries. This type of fencing fell out of style in the early 1900′s. It was easier to produce nice looking fences out of different materials and alloys. Wrought iron fell out of favor due to the ease and cost of making these cheaper fences that looked just as good to some. You would only be able to get them if you purchased old wrought iron and restored it. There is a new popularity to wrought iron fencing in the 21st century. Many people are once again drawn to the attractiveness of this type of fence. You will gain a lot of safety as well when this is your choice. Many may want to use their fence as a deterrent to people entering their property by making the fence dangerous to climb. There are other ways to offer this danger, but these methods are not pleasing to the eye and are much more dangerous. You can have your wrought iron fence made to be a very simple fence. Some may choose to have a more elaborate design for their home fencing. You will even be able to match your fencing to your home protection by having wrought-iron security for your windows and doors too. The most popular color for wrought-iron fencing is black. Some may prefer to have it painted a different color that will go better with the house. The positive to this is that wrought-iron can be painted to match anything. For a nice looking type of fence that does not require a good deal of work to keep it up, wrought-iron is the perfect type for many. Those who have a historic home may want to use this type of fencing to keep with the integrity of the age of the home. You will be hard pressed to find any other type of fencing that looks just as good with an older styled home as it does with a more modern design. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/2580080 |
