Posted: 03 Jul 2015 09:59 AM PDT Popular Options For Ornamental FencesFences are primarily for keeping unwanted people or animals out, keeping pets or people in, or providing security and privacy. But there’s no reason they can’t look good at the same time. Ornamental fences are available in lots of different materials and styles, as diverse as the number of houses that they enclose. Aluminum is one of the more common materials for ornamental fences. It’s strong, it resists rust and it can be shaped into virtually any form. Even more traditional styles, such as wrought iron, are actually made of aluminum then coated or painted to look like something else. True wrought iron is still a popular option for decorative fences, though. In the past, it was often brittle and subject to breaking and chipping, but modern manufacturing and improvements in the materials have improved this aspect considerably. It’s also much less prone to rust and oxidation than it used to be. Metal is hardly your only choice for ornamental fences, however. Vinyl is another popular option. It can be shaped into almost any design and comes in many different colors. It will last virtually forever, without cracking or peeling. And because it’s highly adaptable and can be formed in a curve, it’s a perfect choice for enclosing areas that don’t follow a simple shape. Wood is also very popular, of course. It can be cut into almost any size and shape, such as the traditional picket fence, scallop-shaped, cleft or waffle and even elaborate hand-carving. And fence posts can also be highly ornamental. Integrated lighting and ornate post caps are just a couple of the many options available. Many types of fences can be made more ornamental by adding various accessories. For example, you could top a wrought iron fence with a French-style triad spear or a British-style quad flare. Ornamental designs also aren’t limited just to the fence itself – gates can also be made highly decorative. Their design can be integrated with the rest of the fence, or they can be made to stand out more. For example, you may choose to add a logo or family crest to the gate. Even if you have a gate that is opened and closed on a regular basis, such as one blocking your driveway, the ornamental features can be integrated into things such as the hinges and other hardware.
